Description
Tikkurila's Supi Sauna Wax is a water-based protective finish made with natural wax, developed in Finland for the timber inside a sauna. Like a thin stain, it soaks into the wood and leaves a silky, semi-matt surface that helps keep dirt and water out. This clear version keeps the timber close to its natural colour, because it does not deepen the grain the way oil treatments do. It suits benches, panelled walls and ceilings, doors and window frames, and a 1 litre tin covers roughly 10–13 m², depending on the wood species.

Using the wax
Clean the timber first with a specialist sauna wood cleaner such as our Sauna Clean, rinse thoroughly and let it dry. Cover any ceramic tile joints nearby, as the wax is very liquid and soaks into grout easily. Stir the tin well before and during use, then apply one thin coat along the grain with a foam brush or sponge. Too much wax can leave the surface feeling slippery, and a heavy layer on the benches can make them feel hotter when bathing. Leave it to dry until the next day and add a second light coat only if needed. Pre-heat and ventilate the sauna thoroughly before its first use.
Good to know
Do not apply over oil-treated timber unless the oil has worn away almost completely. For thermally modified timber, Tikkurila recommends a version of this wax tinted to TVT 318R rather than the clear finish. Test on a hidden area first, such as under a bench, to see how the finished surface will look on your wood.
