Description
These SHP thermo alder bench boards from Finnmark Sauna bring a warm, hazel-brown surface and subtle texture to sauna seating. The SHP profile is the standard for sauna benches: a rectangular section with radiused corners, here finished with a smooth R3 (3 mm) edge, while the full 28 mm thickness keeps the boards flat and resists warping and twisting over time. Like other heat-treated timbers, thermo alder carries a low risk of warping, will not splinter and does not overheat in sauna temperatures. Please note that this particular timber may present a slightly darker tone, and colour and grain can vary considerably between boards, packs and batches; the price reflects this potential variation, and if a close colour match is essential we recommend bringing a sample and collecting the material in person. Boards are 120 mm wide and sold in packs of four in 2100 mm or 2400 mm lengths, with our Bench Fabrication Service available if you would rather have a bespoke bench system made for you.

Timber
Thermo alder has a beautiful hazel-brown colour and a subtle texture favoured by many. Like other heat-treated timbers, it carries a low risk of warping and twisting, and it will not splinter or overheat in the hot temperatures of a sauna. As a natural product, timber shows some colour variation between different packs and batches.
Colour variation
Timber is a natural product and no two pieces are exactly alike; variations in colour, grain pattern and texture are natural characteristics. Some species vary in colour and texture from board to board and pack to pack, and in some cases along the length of a single board. This particular timber may present a slightly darker tone, and colour can vary significantly from season to season, batch to batch and supplier to supplier. To keep a consistent appearance, avoid mixing timber from different sources wherever possible. If a close colour match is essential, we strongly recommend bringing a sample and collecting the material in person. This product is priced to reflect the potential colour variation.
Profile
SHP is the standard timber profile for sauna bench boards: a rectangular section with radiused corners, usually R2, R3 or R4 (a 2 mm, 3 mm or 4 mm radius on each corner). The radius value describes the smoothness of the board edge, and these boards are finished at R3. The 28 mm thickness is important in preventing warping and twisting over time. Other timbers are available in our wider SHP bench board collection.
Quality & Wastage
Our thermo alder sauna timber is A-grade: durable, knot-free and with a low risk of splintering. We recommend a wastage allowance of 15% for these SHP bench boards, which also accounts for any risk of damage in transit. General sauna wood grading standards apply; grading rules and our interactive Bench Board Calculator are available on finnmarksauna.com, and our team is happy to advise if you are unsure how much you require.
Bench fabrication
These boards are well suited to a DIY bench build. Alternatively, our Sauna Bench Fabrication Service can create your ideal bench system for you.
Ordering & Delivery
Timber orders travel on a palletised shipping service and may require a kerbside drop or handballing off the freight vehicle. Costs are calculated at checkout and differ between UK Mainland, Highland and Island postcodes. We normally ship lengths of up to 2400 mm; beyond that, shipping costs rise significantly. If we do not stock your required length but have a longer one available, our cutting service can cut it down for a small fee: you purchase the full length and the off-cut is added to the pallet. For longer lengths or the cutting service, call +44 (0)20 8050 2895 or email support@finnmarksauna.com.
