Thermory's SHP alder bench boards pair A-grade timber with the standard bench profile, in a light brown shade with warm pink undertones. Alder is a traditional sauna timber with a low risk of twisting and warping, and because it does not overheat and repels water, the boards stay comfortable in hot, humid conditions. Each pack contains four boards, 28 mm thick and 120 mm wide, supplied in 2100 mm or 2400 mm lengths with softly radiused R3 edges. They suit DIY bench builds, or our Sauna Bench Fabrication Service can make up a bespoke system. Allow around 15% for wastage, and finish the boards with paraffin oil (sold separately), which slightly deepens the colour of the wood.

Timber
Alder is a popular choice in traditional saunas thanks to its natural qualities and a low risk of twisting and warping. The wood has a beautiful light brown colour with warm pink undertones, and a subtle scent that resembles freshly cut hay, which many find pleasant in the sauna. Alder does not overheat and has water repellent properties, so it suits hot and humid environments.

SHP is the standard timber profile for sauna bench boards: a rectangular section with radiused corners, usually R2, R3 or R4 (2 mm, 3 mm or 4 mm radii). The radius value describes the smoothness of the board edge; these boards are finished to R3, a 3 mm radius on each corner. The 28 mm thickness is important to prevent warping and twisting over time.
Quality & Wastage
Our alder sauna timber is A-grade: durable, knot-free and with a low risk of splintering. We recommend a wastage allowance of 15%, which also covers any potential damage in transit. As a natural product, timber shows some colour variation between packs and batches, and general sauna wood grading standards apply. Sauna timber ships on a palletised service because of its size, so delivery may be a kerbside drop or require handballing off the vehicle. Costs vary with order size and quantity and differ between UK Mainland, Highland and Island postcodes; they are calculated at checkout. We usually ship lengths of up to 2400 mm; beyond that, shipping costs rise significantly. If we do not stock your required length but have a longer one, our cutting service can cut it down for a small fee to reduce shipping costs: you purchase the full length and the off-cut travels on the pallet.
