This cosy bespoke indoor sauna installation transformed the room into a relaxing retreat that blends function and aesthetics. The custom designed and built sauna was tailored to create a warm, welcoming environment, offering balance between modern features and traditional sauna elements. By combining premium materials - from room preparation to final touches, such as specialist insulation boards, thermo aspen, and the high-performance IKI Pillar electric sauna heater - with proper ventilation and natural light, which are fundamental to an authentic experience, the sauna provides a long-lasting and pleasant environment for relaxation.
The classic-looking bespoke sauna features a thermo aspen interior, IKI Pillar electric sauna heater and a two-tiered floating bench set-up.
Thoughtfully Designed Two-Tiered Floating Benches
The layout of the sauna features two tiers of benching, a key design choice that ensures enough space for 4 people to comfortably enjoy the “löyly” (steam) rising from the sauna heater. The wider lower bench allows flexibility to move from the top bench down for a gentler heat. The floating bench design adds a modern and minimalist feel, maximising space and creating a seamless aesthetic alongside the narrow bench board panels.
The vertically installed, wider 140 mm thermo aspen cladding contrasts beautifully with the narrower bench wood profile.
Elegant and Durable Thermo Aspen
The sauna’s materials were carefully selected to enhance the visual appeal and durability. Thermo aspen was used for both the benching and the wall cladding, a popular choice for its dimensional stability, golden- brown colour and pleasant toasted scent. Naturally thermally treated at temperatures of around 190°C, aspen’s durability is significantly enhanced, making the wood more resistant to moisture and warping. The thermal treatment darkens the wood’s colour, not only giving it a beautiful hue but also making it fairly easy to maintain and keep clean.
Thermo aspen has a beautiful golden- brown colour and a toasted aroma. The ventilation cover blends seamlessly into the cladding while ensuring proper air circulation in the room.
IKI Pillar 9kW Electric Sauna Heater: The Heart of the Sauna
The heater is the sauna’s core, and for this project we specified the IKI Pillar 9kW electric sauna heater – an ideal choice for its combination of performance and design. The heater’s stainless steel mesh surrounds 150kg of sauna stones, ensuring a long-lasting, soft and consistent “löyly.” Characteristic to IKI sauna heaters, which are designed and built in Finland, the IKI Pillar’s ability to provide pleasant, gentle steam in this room of approximately 3.1m x 2.1m ensures that our clients can enjoy a traditional sauna experience with every use.
The IKI Pillar allows free airflow through its stainless steel mesh, which surrounds a large amount of sauna stones, guaranteeing a gentle and humid steam.
Surrounded by a custom-made wooden heater guard and controlled with UKU-Wi-Fi with a black glass surface, safety and easy controlling of the heater are ensured. With the UKU Wi-Fi, our clients can also use their phones to conveniently get the sauna ready from wherever they are.
The UKU Wi-Fi Controller has a stylish black glass panel and allows users to conveniently adjust time and heating from their phone.
Advanced Sauna Lighting: Subtle Ambiance by SAAS Instruments
Lighting is a critical element in creating the right ambiance in the sauna. For this installation, the SAAS Highline Viiva LED strips were mounted onto the backrest and bench lips. The chosen lights provide the durability and performance required in the high-temperature and humid environment of a sauna.
The soft, ambient glow highlights the natural beauty of the wooden interior, while creating an inviting and calm atmosphere, perfect for unwinding and enjoying the health benefits of sauna. The subtle strips also emphasize the clean lines and minimalist design of the sauna, adding to its modern, Nordic aesthetic.
The SAAS Viiva LED light strips cast a warm glow downwards on the bench lips and upwards on the backrest.
Natural Light
Natural light plays an essential role in enhancing the ambiance, connecting the indoor sauna with the garden outside. This feature not only creates a more open and expansive feel but also adds to the authenticity of the sauna experience by bringing nature and brightness into the space.
